This past weekend we had the privilege of having Dr. Richard Swenson speak to us regarding Science and the Sovereignty of God.
Dr. Swenson gave us amazing facts about the human body – how it really stands as the pinnacle of God’s creation. Facts like the body produces 2-10 million red blood cells every second, the human ear has a million moving parts, that the average human sheds 40lbs of dead skin over their lifetime (I haven’t seen any infomercials for this weight loss method!!) and the fact that each of us “leaks” atoms that are absorbed by other people. The list went on and once again we see how creator God’s imagination is awesome. God is holding our entire body and the entire universe together in delicate balance. Without His hand on things nothing would exist.
These facts and each new one science discovers continually validates the master design of God. The follower of Christ need not fear science, but rather can take comfort that science reinforces what we believe.
Yet the real story is not in facts, or new discoveries or big numbers with lots of zeros. The real story is that this same God who made us and who holds everything in the universe together wants more than anything to have a personal relationship with us. For it is not facts that will save us. Facts will not fill the deep longing inside every human heart for a connection to God. Belief, faith and trust alone will do it. For no matter how much we learn from science there will always be things about God that we will not understand – if this wasn’t the case he would not be God at all. Until a person can accept this, their faith will struggle. What it really comes down to is whether we will, in view of the overwhelming evidence from science and the world around us, put our faith in God for our eternal future even though there are things about this world that are beyond our comprehension?
Dr. Swenson said that the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is the measure of the mercy of God. He went to the ultimate length to show us his love and grace. At some point each of us needs to decide if we are going to reach out beyond the realm of scientific facts and by faith accept what Christ has done for us. Hebrews 11: 6 says “and without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
So, have you done this? Have you reached out to God in faith and accepted Him as your savior? If not, do so today and begin to experience the peace that comes from a personal relationship with a God who is responsible for all those big numbers and yet deeply interested in you as a child of His.
